What the petroleum giants would have you believe...
Another circulated story often tossed about against the fact that "fossil fuel" is causing global warming... has been "busted": this one was the Sun's increasing energy output is raising temperatures here on Earth.
In fact, for a part of the 20th century, energy output from the Sun was on the increase, but in 1985 that trend reversed and has been on the decline ever since.
And while the Sun's energy reaching Earth decreased, global temperatures continued on the rise.
This "solar" energy/global warming theory was studied by a European team of scientists, and published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society.
Their article is entitled "Recent oppositely directed trends in solar climate and the Earth's surface air temperature.

The researchers point out that every single natural cause linked to global warming has actually been moving in the exact opposite direction needed to account for increasing temperatures.

Global clean-up of toxic PCBs
------------------------------
Geneva – Governments, donor agencies and commercial firms from around the world are meeting here for two days to promote international efforts to rid the world of PCBs, one of 12 highly toxic chemicals targeted for elimination by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).
PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, are a class of synthetic organic chemicals that are amongst the most widespread of all environmental pollutants, found worldwide in air, water, soil, food – and the fatty tissues of humans and animals.
“The financial and technical challenges of eliminating PCBs from the planet will require a vigorous partnership between the public and private sectors,” said Executive Director Klaus Toepfer of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), under whose auspices the Stockholm Convention was adopted.
“While international donors and national governments will set priorities and invest tens of millions of dollars, commercial firms have the expertise and technologies to perform much of the actual clean-up work,” he said.
Due to their low flammability, PCBs have been used extensively in electrical equipment such as transformers and large capacitors used in power lines and major facilities. They have also been used as additives in paint, carbonless copy paper, and plastics.
Many hundreds of thousands of tonnes of PCBs have been commercially manufactured since 1929. Annual world production peaked in the late 1960s at close to 60,000 tonnes.
Although production is now banned under the Convention, PCBs continue to pose a risk to human health and the environment because of the wide array of PCB-containing electrical equipment still in service. Tonnes of wastes containing or contaminated by PCBs are also being held at temporary storage sites, particularly in developing countries.
In addition, large quantities of PCBs have been discharged into soils, rivers and lakes over the years. Further releases continue to result due to accidents, the repair and decommissioning of equipment, the demolition of buildings and the continued existence of imperfectly sealed landfills and waste drums.
The Convention, which entered into force on 17 May 2004, gives governments until 2025 to phase out “in-place equipment” containing PCBs, as long as the equipment is maintained in a way that prevents leaks. It also grants another three years to ensure the environmentally sound management of PCB-contaminated wastes.
The Convention recognizes that, for economic and practical reasons, it will take some time to completely eliminate PCBs. Equipment containing PCBs is dispersed widely across the countryside, notably along electric power-line grids. Replacing all of this equipment immediately would be impractical and expensive, especially for financially strapped developing countries.
With the Convention now in force, it is widely recognized that the need for financing and commercial services for destroying PCBs will expand dramatically. The 9-10 June meeting, which is sponsored by UNEP and financed by the Government of Switzerland, offers donors and PCB-related industries the opportunity to discuss upcoming needs for PCB management and disposal, the international policy framework, logistical issues and available capacities for PCB storage, management, transport and disposal.
The Global Environment Facility serves as the financial mechanism for the Convention on an interim basis and will be responsible for channelling much of the international funding for finding and destroying PCBs.
Large numbers of people have been exposed to PCBs through food contamination. Consumption of PCB-contaminated rice oil in Japan in 1968 and in Taiwan in 1979 caused pigmentation of nails and mucous membranes and swelling of the eyelids, along with fatigue, nausea, and vomiting.
Due to the persistence of PCBs in their mothers' bodies, children born up to seven years after the Taiwan incident showed developmental delays and behavioral problems. Similarly, children of mothers who ate large amounts of contaminated fish from Lake Michigan showed poorer short-term memory function. PCBs also suppress the human immune system and are listed as probable human carcinogens.
PCBs are also toxic to fish, killing them at higher doses and causing spawning failures at lower doses. Research also links PCBs to reproductive failure and suppression of the immune system in various wild animals, such as seals and mink.
Every human in the world carries traces of POPs in his or her body. POPs are highly stable compounds that can last for years or decades before breaking down. They circulate globally through a process known as the "grasshopper effect". POPs released in one part of the world can, through a repeated process of evaporation and deposit, be transported through the atmosphere to regions far away from the original source.

The first case before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2009 will be
argued on Monday by Earthjustice as we oppose a combined attack
on our nation's waterways by the Bush administration and Alaska
Gov. Sarah Palin.
We are sending out this news alert to our supporters because of
the issue's great significance.
Bush and Palin are jointly asking the Supreme Court to
re-interpret the Clean Water Act so that the mining industry can
dump its wastes in streams, rivers and lakes throughout America.
They want permission to kill every fish and organism in a
particular waterway if necessary.
The only obstacle to achieving their ambitions is Earthjustice.
Arguing the case is Earthjustice attorney Tom Waldo, whose
appearance before the Supreme Court climaxes a successful,
years-long battle in lower courts to prevent a mining company
from killing a pristine Alaska lake with chemically treated
waste. It's this case the high court is hearing on Monday.

But, as Tom knows all too well, the stakes are much higher than
one small lake. An adverse decision would make a shambles of the
Clean Water Act and the waters it is supposed to protect.
The threat is especially imminent in Alaska, whose governor
openly promotes unrestrained dumping of mine tailings because of
the mining boom it could ignite. The first venture to benefit
would be the proposed Pebble Mine -- a monster gold mine planned
to operate above Alaska's remarkable Bristol Bay, home to the
world's richest sockeye salmon fishery. Dumping mine wastes into
its waters is disastrous to the food chain.
As a supporter of Earthjustice, you have the opportunity to read
a live report from the Supreme Court on Monday through our blog,
unEarthed. The case will be heard at 10 a.m. (EST), and we
expect to have our first blog report shortly after noon.

Cut greenhouse gases to save coral reefs: scientists
August 27th, 2008To keep coral reefs from being eaten away by increasingly acidic oceans, humans need to limit the amount of climate-warming greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, a panel of marine scientists said on Wednesday.
“The most logical and critical action to address the impacts of ocean acidification on coral reefs is to stabilize atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration,” the scientists said in a document called the Honolulu Declaration, for release at a U.S. conference on coral reefs in Hawaii.
Ocean acidification is another threat to corals caused by global warming, along with rising sea levels, higher sea surface temperatures and coral bleaching, the scientists said.
Coral reefs are a “sentinel ecosystem,” a sign that the environment is changing, said one of the experts, Billy Causey of the U.S. National Marine Sanctuary Program.
“Although ocean acidification is affecting the health of our oceans, the same thing — increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere — is going to in fact be affecting terrestrial environments also,” Causey said by telephone from Hawaii.
Coral reefs offer economic and environmental benefits to millions of people, including coastal protection from waves and storms and as sources of food, pharmaceuticals, jobs and revenue, the declaration said.
But corals are increasingly threatened by warming sea surface temperatures as well as ocean acidification.
Oceans are getting more acidic because they have been absorbing some 525 billion tons of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide over the last two centuries, about one-third of all human-generated carbon dioxide for that period.
The carbon dioxide combines with sea water to form carbonic acid.
Marine researchers have long recognized acidification in deep ocean water far from land, but a study published this year in the journal Science found this same damaging phenomenon on the Pacific North American continental shelf from Mexico to Canada, and quite likely elsewhere around the globe.
The water became so corrosive that it started dissolving the shells and skeletons of starfish, clams and corals.
Stabilizing carbon dioxide emissions was the Honolulu Declaration’s top long-term recommendation. The key short-term recommendation was to nurture coral reefs that seem to have natural resilience against acidification.
This could be adopted immediately by managers of protected marine areas, Causey said.
The Honolulu Declaration will be presented to the United Nations and to other global, regional and national forums.

I raised wolvesfor 10 years until the surrounding people found out and decided to terrorize the wolfs. I find that ignrance breed stupidity. Such as hunting from air. I grew up a trapper and hunter but there were certain respect for the animals went with that. Let me add that Gov. Palin being so proud of shooting a moose from the air , simply mad me angry. The wolf though is a tough predator with a keen sense of smell and sharp vision. This would be why a person doesn't see them much. This was put into them to protect them from us. For what other animal hunts a wolf. Peace and Love for all, Van
